A Net Zero Home Means Zero Power Loss during Power Outages

Recently, Tropical Storm Isaias caused power outages all over New England. One of GBCo's recent new construction clients sent the following statement of how their new energy efficient Net Zero home faired during the power outage.

"The power was out for more than 24 hours. We ran everything normally. There was no need to do anything. We used the Tesla house battery backup and the following day the house battery refilled by solar, as usual.

We didn't miss a beat, other than the internet that went out for a few hours. However, that was the cable company's issue.

We are very pleased!"

A description of Tesla's Powerwall (as shown above) from the Tesla Website:

"Powerwall reduces your reliance on the grid by storing your solar energy for use when the sun isn’t shining. Use Powerwall alone or combine it with other Tesla products to save money, reduce your carbon footprint and prepare your home for power outages."

BATTERY BACKUP POWER

"The next generation of battery storage has arrived, giving solar customers clean, reliable, and efficient backup power that also lessens their daily dependence on the power grid.

Grid-tied solar electric systems are a great way to save money using free power from the sun. However, most grid-tied solar arrays are designed to shut down when they lose grid connection. When you pair solar electricity with battery storage, you can supply critical loads in your home, or even function as a grid independent “energy island.”
